Betting on the PSL: Premier Soccer League Markets Explained
PSL betting covers South Africa’s top-flight football, with markets ranging from match results to goals and season outcomes. Similar-looking selections can settle differently. Before comparing premier soccer league odds, check the competition, the period covered and the bookmaker’s rules for a changed fixture. This guide explains the main markets and shows how to compare operators without treating any price as a promise of returns.
What counts as a PSL match?
The Premier Soccer League’s top division is currently called the Betway Premiership and has 16 clubs. The PSL also lists the Nedbank Cup, MTN8, Carling Knockout and Motsepe Foundation Championship as separate competitions. A cup price is therefore not automatically a league bet. The PSL’s competition guide identifies each tournament.
In South African football betting, confirm the competition, the home and away order and the kick-off date before choosing a market. The same teams can meet in different competitions, while a 90-minute result and a team-to-qualify selection may have different settlement rules.
How are PSL bets settled?
For standard soccer markets, “full time” normally means 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time after the normal-time whistle and a penalty shootout are separate. Supabets’ soccer terms apply this distinction unless a market states otherwise. A stoppage-time goal can change a match-result or goals bet.
In a cup tie, the score can be level at normal time even though one team later advances. Check whether the selection says “match result” or “to qualify”, and whether extra time or penalties count.
Postponements and abandonments need their own rule check. Supabets generally treats an unplayed match as a non-runner unless it takes place within its specified 24-hour window; it may settle markets already decided before abandonment. Policies can differ across operators and bet types. Read the relevant postponement terms before assuming a refund.

PSL betting markets explained
Match result: 1X2
1 means a home win, X a draw and 2 an away win after normal time. A bet on either team to win loses if the match finishes level. “Home” refers to the side listed first on the fixture, even when it plays at another stadium. Betway’s market guide lists full-time and half-time 1X2.
Double chance and draw no bet
Double chance covers two results: 1X is home or draw, X2 is draw or away, and 12 is either team to win. Draw no bet asks you to pick a team; a normal-time draw returns the stake under the market rules, while an opposing win loses. These selections cover different outcomes, so compare their prices accordingly. Supabets defines both markets.
Total goals and both teams to score
Over/under concerns the combined goals from both sides. On a 2.5-goal line, over needs at least three goals; under needs no more than two. Both teams to score (BTTS) “yes” needs each side to score at least once. A 1–1 score satisfies BTTS “yes” and under 2.5 goals. Check whether a listed line applies to the match, one team or one half. See Supabets’ goals-market rules.
Handicaps
A handicap adds or subtracts the stated number of goals for settlement only. It does not change the official result. A three-way handicap keeps an adjusted draw as a selection. An Asian handicap on a whole-goal line may refund the stake when the adjusted scores are level. Check the sign and type before placing a bet. Supabets explains Asian handicaps.
Half-time, correct score and match events
Half-time markets use the score after the first half, including its stoppage time. Correct score needs the exact score at the specified settlement point. Other markets may cover a goalscorer, corners or bookings. Check their detail: own goals may be excluded from named goalscorer bets, and an awarded corner may not count unless taken. Coverage and rules can differ by fixture. For an anytime scorer, Supabets treats a player who appears as a participant; its first-scorer rules can void a selection on a substitute who enters after that team’s first goal. Card markets may use different counts for yellow and red cards and can exclude cards shown to staff. Check these details before comparing event prices. Supabets specifies its goalscorer and corner rules; Betway explains its card rules.
Season-long markets
Outright league winner, relegation and top goalscorer markets run across many fixtures. Check how ties, transfers and promotion play-offs are treated. Supabets, for example, counts league goals for its divisional top-goalscorer market, excludes play-off matches and applies dead-heat rules to ties. A cup goal does not become a Premiership goal. See its season-market conditions.
How to compare premier soccer league odds
South African sportsbooks commonly show decimal odds. For an accepted fixed-odds single, potential gross return = stake × decimal odds; this includes the stake. Potential profit is the gross return minus the stake. Betway’s bet-slip explanation uses the same calculation. The figures describe a possible winning return, not the likelihood of winning.
Compare identical selections, lines and settlement periods. A full-time home win differs from home draw no bet; over 2.5 goals differs from over 1.5. For the same stake and market, a higher accepted decimal price gives a higher possible gross return. Prices can move before acceptance: Betway’s betting rules say odds become fixed when the bet is accepted.
Dividing one by decimal odds gives an implied probability before accounting for the bookmaker’s margin. Treat that as a reading of the price, not an independent forecast. Check the final slip for the market, price and stake before submitting it. Also check any maximum payout: a higher price is less useful if your intended stake would exceed the operator’s limit. Betway, for example, sets sport-specific payout limits.

PSL fixtures betting: what to check before kick-off
Use the PSL’s official match centre to confirm teams, kick-off time, venue, recent results and the table. The league noted in its 2026/27 calendar announcement that some clubs would use alternative venues. The listed home side may therefore play away from its usual ground.
Put recent form in context: review the opponents faced, the time since each team’s last match and credible team news. Confirmed line-ups near kick-off can be more useful than an early rumour. Treat past meetings cautiously when squads or coaches have changed. For totals and BTTS, look at how both sides have scored and conceded against comparable opponents, while remembering that a short sample can mislead. None of these checks turns a fixture into a certainty.
For PSL fixtures betting, compare the bookmaker’s listing with the league fixture again just before betting. If the date, venue or home designation changed, check the operator’s rescheduling rules. Verify that the slip still shows your intended selection and price.
Singles, multiples, live bets and cash out
A single relies on one selection. A multiple combines selections and multiplies their decimal odds; normally every leg must win for it to pay, subject to void rules. More legs create more ways to lose. If a leg is void, the remaining selections may be recalculated at lower combined odds, depending on the bookmaker’s rules; Betway illustrates this. A same-match bet builder has its own terms. Betway, for instance, voids its whole Build a Bet if one component is voided. See its feature rules.
Live prices and available markets change as the match develops. Read any revised price on the slip before accepting it. Cash out, when offered, settles an open bet early at the displayed amount, which can be above or below the stake. Availability is not guaranteed: Betway’s cash-out terms allow offers to change or be withdrawn. Consider it an optional feature rather than a reason to place a bet.

Choosing a South African bookmaker for PSL markets
Check licensing first. The National Gambling Board says online sports betting is permitted through a bookmaker licensed in South Africa for online betting, and gambling is for adults aged 18 or older. Find the site’s licence details and check the NGB verified-operators directory or a provincial board’s register. Trading names and licensed company names can differ, so use the licence number and legal entity when checking a listing.
Then compare the service for the bets you intend to place:
- Coverage: Are Premiership fixtures and your preferred markets available?
- Price and limits: Compare the same selection and check minimum stakes and maximum payouts.
- Rules: Look up extra time, postponed matches, non-participating players and void legs.
- Payments and support: Check rand deposits and withdrawals, verification steps and support channels.
- Offers: Read any promotion’s eligibility, qualifying markets, minimum odds and expiry.
Check your preferred market on an actual fixture, including whether it remains available near kick-off. A broad football menu does not ensure a suitable price or rule for a particular PSL fixture. Use the final bet slip and the operator’s current terms to make the comparison.
Bet responsibly
Betting can lose money. Set a spending limit, keep essential expenses separate and avoid chasing losses. Only adults aged 18 or older may gamble in South Africa. If betting is causing harm, the National Gambling Board lists the free South African Responsible Gambling Foundation helpline: 0800 006 008. See the NGB’s guidance.
