What does handicap betting mean?
A handicap changes the score used to settle a wager. A minus sign subtracts goals from your chosen team’s actual score; a plus sign adds them. These are the outcomes most likely to cause confusion. A −1 selection wins on a victory by two or more and loses on a draw or defeat. A +1 selection wins on a win or draw but loses on a defeat by two or more. Always read the line beside the team.
Quarter ball handicap: how the split works
A quarter ball handicap is shorthand for two neighbouring handicaps. Half of your stake goes on each. You do not need to place two separate bets; the split is part of the market’s settlement. On a R100 stake, the calculation uses R50 per line.
The 0.25 lines
A bet on −0.25 splits into 0 and −0.5. If your team wins, both R50 parts win. If it draws, the 0 part pushes and R50 is returned, while the −0.5 part loses. That is a half loss: R50 of the original R100 stake is lost. If your team loses, both parts lose.

A worked South African football example
Imagine a hypothetical match between two South African clubs. You back the home team at −0.75 with R100. The bet is divided into R50 at −0.5 and R50 at −1. The score at full time is 2–1 to the home team.
The home side won by one goal. After a −0.5 adjustment it still leads, so that R50 portion wins. After a −1 adjustment the teams are level, so the other R50 is returned. Your overall result is a half win. The cash return depends on your accepted odds.

What to check before placing a bet
Read the line and the match period
Check the sign, team and line. Then check whether the market covers the full match, a half or extra time.
